August is practically here, which for many means going off to college, taking kids back to school, and soon enough fall will be here. Swimming holes, trips to the beach and sun bathing will become a distant memory of an adventurous summer during the winter months. Before the summer is over, I challenge everyone to do at least one (preferably all) of things on this bucket list worthy list of things to do before the summer comes to an end!!
- Go Camping! (DUH)
My summer has been filled with adventure because of a simple tent, a sleeping bag, and sleeping in the woods. Camping disconnects you from the stress of everyday life, and brings you closer to nature, which goes a long way in building a stronger mental and physical self. Put your dog on a leash, get your best friend to go with you, and enjoy a few days in a nearby state park, or for even more adventure go somewhere totally new and camp there! Just be sure to tell someone where you are going, and when to be expecting you back.
- Make a Fresh Fruity Drink
There is nothing better in the hot summer months than a fresh fruit smoothie. Grab some bananas, strawberry, blueberries, or whatever fruit you love most, throw it in the blender with some ice and enjoy it out of a large mason jar! Yumm! There are thousands of recipes online for a perfect smoothie, and for adults adding a little alcohol isn't a bad thing. For me the freshness of the fruit is enough.
- Attend or Build a Bonfire
Bonfires can be so much fun, especially in south (we know how to party) We almost all know someone who's house is in the middle of nowhere. Everyone can gather around a fire that Burning Man would envy, grab some hot dogs, s'mores, and some cold drinks. Don't forget to invite your favorite hippie friend who can play all the 70s classics on their guitar and enjoy the night! Remember your fire safety, have a large bucket of water or fire extinguisher near by at all times. When the long night is over, make sure the fire is fully out. The last thing you want to do is start a forest fire during this dry summer.
- Go Hiking
There are plenty of places across the country, and world to hike at. You might even be surprised how many places are in or around your home town. Lots of trails are located along rivers, waterfalls, or lakes so you can cool off in the wild. It is great exercise, and being in nature just feels good. Hike to the top of a local waterfall or mountain look-out point, and watch the sunset. Be sure to soak in all the Vitamin D you can before the winter months keep you inside more.
- Get a Canoe
If you can't afford to buy one or just don't have one, local rentals are available in most places. Hop in with a day pack, and paddle either across a secluded lake, or serene river and just drift. Take in all the silence and natural beauty around you, don't forget to stop and enjoy lunch on the river bank. For more excitement go kayaking down some rapids, or try kayak fishing!
No matter how you plan to spend these last weeks of summer, be sure to spend as much time outdoors, with your loved ones, or spend time alone in the wilderness. You will be thanking yourself for it when the snow is piling up, exams are stressing you out, and you have to bundle up just to check the mail. There are way more things to do like having an epic water balloon fight, seeing an outdoor movie or concert, even taking a nap in a hammock can add to the joy of summer 2016.
