After a long, hot summer, its finally fall here in South Carolina, and even though its still pretty warm outside, there are lots of great places to go camping right now. The beautiful fall foliage is one of the first things that comes to mind, but there are so many benefits that go along with camping this time of year. Here are my Top 5 favorite things about camping in the fall:
1. The Weather
Let's face it, hiking in the summer can be miserable, and trying to snuggle up in a hot, and sometimes sweaty tent is not always the best way to get the good night sleep you need. However, in the fall, the air is cool, and crisp, and wrapping up in your sleeping bag at night is so much more enjoyable. Waking up, and drinking a cup of fresh coffee, and eating warm bowl of oatmeal is a perfect way to start your morning. By mid afternoon you can shed a few layers, and enjoy the lingering warmth of the sun, and when it sets in the evening you can sit around the campfire roasting marshmallows, or making a warm pot of Chili Mac before heading off to bed.
2. The Views
During the fall, the leaves are changing colors, and falling off of the trees; wildlife can be very active, and the forest takes on a totally different vibe this time of year. The bright orange and yellow leaves, contrasting with a cool morning fog is so refreshing, and such a peaceful way to spend your time. North Carolina, Washington, and Colorado have some of the best views this time of year.
3. Lower Rates
When the peak season of summer is over, campgrounds lower their prices, and become first come first serve. whether you are on a budget, want to camp in multiple places, or stay for more than just a night or two, camping in the fall is the perfect time.
4. Less Bugs
In the summer months camping in the forest without a bottle of bug spray near by will most likely ruin your experience. With the cooler temperatures, all those nasty mosquitoes and biting flies seek warmer weather elsewhere. Make sure you pack the bug spray just in case. Myself for example, a mosquito miles away would go out of its way to bite me, so I never leave it out of my pack.
5. Fewer Crowds
Along with all the other the other benefits of fall camping, this one is probably one my favorites. When the swimming hole is overrun with party animals, or children enjoying their summer vacation, your relaxing camping trip can turn into a stressful nightmare if the campground is booked. I enjoy being miles into the forest, away from the crowds, so this time of year is my favorite time to go camping.
