The Dramatic Ending...

Mid-June in South Carolina is HOT, and humid, increasing the chance of pop up showers and thunderstorms. Tuesday afternoon was no exception to this, after leaving the falls to prepare for the storm that was rolling in over the mountains, we had plenty to do at camp before it rained. I was scavenging for firewood - the sites are pretty cleared out of the easily accessible wood - I could feel raindrops starting to fall, hearing thunder in the distance I brought Derek the small amount I gathered, and just as a cool breeze blew through the trees and 3 foot tree limb falls on Derek's head! It could have been much worse if the branch had more force, or landed in a different way, he was okay, startled by his near death experience we moved the tent over a few feet, away from the towering pines.

Since our campsite was only a short walking distance from our car, we had some extra pillows, a book I really wanted to finish reading, and a few luxury items. We also did not have cell service in the park, so we would need to drive about a mile or          two down the old logging road to get signal again so we could check in with our moms and let them know  we were safe, and were settling in for the night. Keep in  mind I am in baggy pajama pants and no shoes, at this point my "good" clothes are wet and muddy from  swimming and climbing all day, and my shoes were melted by the fire. *face palm*  When we arrived to the car, Derek  noticed that the air in one of our front tires was low, we    didn't want to wake up in the morning with a flat, so we drove 10 minutes to a gas station to put air in the tire.

We left the gas station a few minutes later, and were heading back through Westminster, SC to Brasstown Falls when a truck suddenly stops a few feet in front of us. I am fortunate Derek is the best driver I have ever seen, and he managed to stop in time, but out of his control a bald tire the caused us to slide about 5-6 feet, and the tire was shredded in the process. Derek pulled over, were both in shock over what just occurred, adrenaline pumping, a near death experience will definitely put you on high alert. We got back in the car and managed to drive into the downtown area of Westminster before the tire tube popped, and we were basically sitting on a rim. In small country towns like that everything closes between 5-6 pm, and it was just after six when all of this happened!!

*It also never fully rained, there was a five minute light shower, and the sun was back out in full force!!

I searched through the car hoping I had some extra clothes and shoes somewhere. All I could find were a pair of Derek's gym shorts, and his tennis shoes. I quickly changed, and laced up his shoes real tight. After alerting my sister of our issue - I always go to her first, that's what big sisters are for right? -  My wonderful mother called a few minutes later. She asked what I needed her to do, so she drove an hour in the dark to pick us up, take us back to our campsite for the night, got back home after midnight, and then drove another hour in the morning to pick us up and take us to get a tire. She did all of this without asking for anything, except for us to not go on any long adventures until our car was safe enough.

Leaving camp at 9 am
I also want to say that my mom is so awesome for not only rescuing me and Derek from a sticky situation, but letting us pack all of camping stuff and Rocky in the back her of her new luxury SUV. I know we were dirty, and smelly, - I felt so bad that I got red dirt on her mats, and our stuff was dirty as well -  but she did not hesitate to offer her help. I love my mom and she is always there for me when I need her most. Without her we probably would have had to sleep in the car overnight, and wander around the town in the morning for somewhere with a tire for us.

After all of that we changed our tire, and headed straight home. By then we were exhausted, I took a shower and headed off to work for the night.

Thank you MOM for rescuing us and always being there for me. I LOVE YOU!!!

To Tent Or Not To Tent

I have always been a tent camper, I like having some space to sit up, stretch out, and be able to still move around once the sun has gone down. There is a sense of security inside the tent once it is zipped up that I found comforting the first time I went camping, so I stuck with it. That being said, the past two or three times I have slept in my cozy tent, my body has hated me for it the next day. It can be very difficult to find perfectly flat ground, then I have to clear the spot of any rocks, tree limbs and debris that will be in my way. It is just a lot of extra work that I do not enjoy.  Although once everything is all set up, I have a spacious home away from home. Its especially nice when having friends along because we can all hunker down in the tent together if it starts raining or gets too cold. I love taking my dogs camping too, the thought of leaving them somewhere gives me anxiety, so being able to have them in the tent next to me is a plus as well. There are SO many op

Top 5 Mistakes to AVOID this Summer

We all make mistakes, but when you are hiking, or going camping, mistakes can be deadly. Anything from wearing the wrong shoes, to not having enough clean water to drink can be inconvenient at home, but in the woods it can turn into a matter of life and death. Here is my life of top 5 mistakes to AVOID this summer. 5. Over/Under Packing When getting ready to go on a hike it can be so easy to cram a weeks worth of stuff into your pack, even if you are only going for a day or two. Extra clothes, that really cute sun hat you never get to wear, towels, extra shoes etc can all add weight to your pack that you don't need or want on a long hike. While you may think it is worth the extra weight in your pack, your back and neck will be hating you for it later. Packing light and only bringing the necessities can be scary at first, but once you realize you don't NEED all of that stuff,  you will find yourself less tired and sore than you would with a heavier bag.
